Join renowned forager and wild food chef, Lucia Stuart, to discover the edible treats hiding in plain sight on Sheppey’s coastline.
‘When the tide goes out, the table is laid.’
For this special event join Lucia Stuart, a renowned forager and innovative wild food chef, to discover the edible treats hiding in plain sight on Sheppey’s coastline. Together we will explore the different levels of the beach, including the intertidal zone which is covered at high tide and uncovered at low tide. This zone is rich in biodiversity, supporting plants and animals from both land and sea. Along the way we’ll learn to identify and harvest nature’s offerings and at the end of our walk we will sample some specially prepared tastings from the two environments.
The tastings will be suitable for vegetarians and carefully prepared, but as they use wild food ingredients from the beach we cannot guarantee they contain no traces of fish or shellfish.
This event is part of the wider project Intertidal Allotment with artist Andrew Merritt. Our spring 2024 events programme invites people to imagine the possibilities for a new community allotment on the north coast of Sheppey. Together we will walk, talk and eat along the coast, learn how to identify coastal flora and fauna, explore the history of the shoreline and speculate on the future of allotments.
Intertidal Allotment is kindly supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Public engagement is supported by Ideas Test.
Please inform us if you or any of your party have food allergies or intolerances at the point of booking.
The event will start and finish on the coastline near a car park and within walking distance of Sheerness-on-Sea station. The meeting place will be emailed to attendees in advance of the event.
The event is open to children over 14 years old who are accompanied by an adult. This is an outdoor event including a walk along the shingle beach, so please wear sturdy and waterproof shoes and dress for the weather. If heavy rain, high winds or other bad weather is forecast the event will be cancelled.
