There are over 650 species of seaweed found around the UK, including a variety of edibles and useful indicator species that mark a change in the condition of an ecosystem. Nowhere in the UK is more than 70 miles from the coast and yet our seaweeds, growing in abundance along our coastline, are a relatively untapped resource.

Join us on this walk and talk with Ian Tittley from the Kent Field Club and Kent Wildlife Trust. Together we’ll walk along the coastline and peer into rock pools while learning about seaweeds, including how they can be used, safely harvested and eaten.

This event is part of the wider project Intertidal Allotment with artist Andrew Merritt. Our spring 2024 events programme invites people to imagine the possibilities for a new community allotment on the north coast of Sheppey. Together we will walk, talk and eat along the coast, learn how to identify coastal flora and fauna, explore the history of the shoreline and speculate on the future of allotments.

Intertidal Allotment is kindly supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Public engagement is supported by Ideas Test.
